Dr John White, Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Illinois, received his medical degree from Columbia University where he also undertook his surgical residency training. He completed a vascular fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital prior to his appointment as Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery at Temple University. He subsequently became a tenured Professor of Surgery and Director of Surgical Research. In 1999, he left Temple University to assume the Chair of Surgery at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, a large tertiary care hospital in a northwest suburb of Chicago. He is clinically active as an Attending Vascular Surgeon and Attending Pediatric Vascular Surgeon. His enduring interest in both basic science and clinical research has been supported by numerous extramural grants, including the NIH and the Falk Trust. He has published more than 180 manuscripts and chapters, edited 6 books, and given many national and international presentations.
He began investigating lower extremity venous drainage early in his career and his initial work helped characterize the anatomy and function of the plantar venous plexus. He then undertook analysis of patterns of pelvic venous flow. In 2001, he established a multi-disciplinary Pelvic Congestion Clinic at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital collaborating with Gynecologists, Interventional Radiologists, and Vascular Surgeons. Since that time, the group has worked together to evaluate more than 1000 women for chronic pelvic pain and possible pelvic venous disease, leading to extensive experience with endovascular intervention and the development of a new surgical treatment for those with Nutcracker Syndrome.
